FREDENS ÖAR Stamps. Post Office of the Aaland Islands, Finland. Design: Stefan Lindfors 2000. The Post Office of the Aaland Islands (Åland) wanted Lindfors to design a new stamp for his native community in honor of the new millennium. Rather than taking the typical direction in choosing a theme such as a fish or a bird - or an insect for that matter - Lindfors found the demilitarized conditions of Åland far more interesting. Choosing the (round) peace mark as the theme for his stamps, he couldn't see any reason for giving the stamp any other shape than round. Lindfors added the commonly used “Fredens Öar" to the graphic lay-out (Swedish for "Islands of Peace"), and it was apparently the third round stamp in the world at the time....
