QUBICO

Photo: Antero Tenhunen and Juha Kastinen; model photo: Marco Melander The business core for the Finnish company KOTINI was based on the invention by Carpenter Mr. Jouni Repo. The invention allows for a building to be assembled within a few days including integrated plumbing and electrical, no scrap material left behind. KOTINI commissioned two Finnish architect offices and Stefan Lindfors to design three different houses based on the KOTINI-component. Lindfors found the idea much comparable with the LEGO concept, and therefore gave the looks of his building accordingly, put a garden terrace on top of the flat roof, and decided to call it "Qubico". The brief for his specific project was to design a private residence for an "upper middle class single". The three houses were presented at the housing fair in Lappeenranta, Finland, in summer 1999, and the first "Qubico" still stands on the premises and was first bought by a single adult.
